U Tariffs, Expanded Access Top Issues for DISCUS/ACSA

As more than 200 distillers from across the country gather virtually for this years public policy conference, Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S. and American Craft Spirits Association indicated the top priorities for virtual visits with Congress will be the European Union’s retaliatory tariffs and market modernization at both the state and federal levels.

Chris Swonger, president/CEO, DISCUS, and Margie A.S. Lehrman, ASCA CEO, said these public policy conferences have resulted in tremendous achievements for the spirits industry. Most notably, this includes the passage of historic legislation to make the federal excise tax cut for distillers permanent as well as important federal support for distillers whose small businesses were affected by the pandemic.

Flying Dog Creates Saltwater Taffy IPA

It’s a partnership with Dolle’s Candyland, Ocean City, Md., historic candymaker.

Saltwater Taffy IPA “has an unmistakable flavor that takes you back to days full of taffy at the beach, while not letting you forget you’re drinking an IPA. The 7.6% ABV beer perfectly blends the flavor of freshly squeezed lemons and citrus hops with rich notes of vanilla creaminess,” Flying Dog Brewery, Maryland’s largest brewery, says..

“Our team loves coming up with surprising flavors to wow consumers and when we can do that while partnering with local legends like Dolle’s, it makes it that much sweeter,” said James Maravetz, vp-marketing. “This innovative IPA has a perfect balance of creamy taffy and bright citrus notes to blow your flip-flops off.”

Saltwater Taffy IPA is being released under the Brewhouse Rarities umbrella, meaning that the idea behind this seaside-inspired treat originated from a Flying Dog employee as part of the brewery’s annual pitch program.

The partnership isn’t one-sided either: Dolle’s is creating a beer flavored version of their famous taffy with hops provided by Flying Dog. The taffy will be available online at dolles.com and in their Ocean City, MD retail locations.

Ohio Distillery Revives Hayner Whiskey with Postmark Closure

Hayner Distilling, Troy, Ohio, said it will release the first bottles of Hayner Bourbon in more than 100 years on June 4.

The original distillery, launched 155 years ago by Lewis Hayner, grew into one of the largest distilleries in Ohio — and the largest mail order whiskey business in America.  To honor that mail order heritage, 500 bottles will bear a “postmark” of June 4, 2021, on the strip sealing the bottle.

The actual bourbon itself was produced at Bardstown Bourbon Co.  It’s 80 proof, 13-year-old Kentucky bourbon.

Broad Branch Distillery Calls for Equal Sales Rights for Distillers

A bill currently pending in the North Carolina legislature would give distillers in the Old North State the same sales rights possessed by brewers and distillers, and Broad Branch Distillery is urged spirits consumers to “stand up for North Carolina distillers and ask your legislators to expand consumer options at distilleries!”

North Carolina distilleries can open on Sundays and holidays for tastings and tours but, unlike breweries and wineries, cannot sell their spirits to visitors. This sales restriction means that some North Carolina distilleries do not open on Sundays and holidays which limits opportunities for you to visit your favorite distillery.

Consumers can sample spirits at special events like trade shows and conventions, but unlike wineries and breweries, North Carolina distilleries cannot sell their products at these events. This restriction makes it hard for you to remember the spirits you like when you visit your local ABC store.

The bill, HB 890 expands opportunities for North Carolina distilleries to sell their products to consumers and would provide much-needed economic relief to distillers AND increase tax revenue to the state following the devastating impacts of COVID.

Jordan Winery Acquires Vineyard

Jordan Vineyard & Winery said it purchased Meola Vineyard in Alexander Valley, just north of Geyserville. This marks the first time that Jordan has purchased land since the acquisition of the 1,200-acre Jordan Estate in 1974. The property totals almost 45 acres with nearly 29 acres planted to cabernet sauvignon, and the purchase price was not disclosed.

“We have been looking to purchase more vineyard land for a very long time,” said John Jordan, CEO, who acquired the winery from his father in 2007. “We have kicked the proverbial tires on a few properties and didn’t make any offers because we weren’t confident that those vineyards would produce grapes worthy of the Jordan master blend. This one is guaranteed and aligns with our focus on making the best cabernet sauvignon in our house style from a combination of estate and grower vineyards.”

Owned by Mario Meola, who purchased the land in 1994, Meola Vineyard has been farmed with mostly organic principles to produce fruit-forward, subtly oaked wines like those he made growing up in southern Italy.

Conceived as an estate bottled winery modeled after First Growth Bordeaux, Jordan has evolved its grape sourcing philosophy over the last three decades. The first shift began in the mid-1990s when phylloxera struck its first estate vineyard—275 acres of land that was purchased in 1972 on the Alexander Valley floor.

This led the Jordans to plant grapevines on Jordan Estate for the first time—a hilly, forested piece of land in southeastern Alexander Valley that is home to Jordan Winery and more than 1,000 acres of open space.

The second shift began in the mid-2000s, when John Jordan took the helm. Long-time winemaker Rob Davis, who retired in 2019, was so taken by the intense black fruits and silky tannins found in the growers’ grapes from vineyards east of Geyserville that he wanted to continue making Jordan from a blend of grower and estate vineyard blocks even after the Jordan Estate’s newly planted grapevines began to bear fruit. Jordan gave Davis the green light to source grapes from any vineyard that would achieve Jordan’s fruit-forward, silky style—as long as the wine remained a cabernet sauvignon from Alexander Valley.

When red blotch disease began to spread in Napa and Sonoma counties a decade ago, another pivotal shift occurred. Since 2016, Jordan has been replanting all of its estate vineyards, roughly 125 acres over seven years.
