Teneral Cellars Launches Title IX 50th Anniversary Collection

Teneral Cellars, a women-owned winery based in northern California, launched “The Perfect Match” Collection, developed in partnership with Billie Jean King’s Leadership Initiative, to celebrate 50 years of Title IX and revolutionary equality bills that protect fundamental human rights.

“The accomplishments of athletes like Billie Jean King have shown us that profound social change is possible through powerful pairings—like sports, women and wine,” says Jill Osur, founder/CEO of Teneral Cellars. “When we think about the next 50 years of gender equality, we envision a world that embraces inclusivity in every sense, including girls and women of color, those who identify as gender non-conforming, LGBTQIA+, those who are disabled, and from rural or lower-income communities. We must continue to educate and inspire action from those who support our shared vision.”

For every bottle of All In Zinfandel that’s sold from “The Perfect Match” collection, $5 will go to the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative, which was founded in 2014 by sports champions and social activists Billie Jean King and Ilana Kloss. The Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative aims to create a world where workplaces are free of discrimination and inequality. Teneral Cellars joins Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative in support of Demand IX and a group coordinated by the Title IX Anniversary Coalition–composed of National Women’s Law Center, Women’s Sports Foundation and other key youth and community leaders–to increase the pace of change toward equity and fairness for all, starting with 1 million signatures on its pledge.

An additional 5 percent of profits from the collection will go to the Women of the Vine & Spirits Foundation to support Teneral Cellars’ scholarship fund for women in wine. Given that only ten percent of winemakers are women, and female sommeliers make only 70 cents for every dollar that their male counterparts earn, this scholarship fund helps disrupt gender inequality by funding scholarship opportunities that advance the careers of women—especially women of color, who are significantly under-represented in the winemaking industry.

Woodford Reserve’s New Distillery Series

Woodford Reserve (Brown-Forman) released a new limited-edition bottle as part of its annual Distillery Series – Toasted Oak Oat Grain.

This new product is made of fully-matured Woodford Reserve Oat Grain Bourbon, which is then finished in a second barrel that has been heavily toasted. The result is a beautiful topaz color liquid that features spice notes including clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg that blend with citrus and a dark chocolate character.

“Experimenting with new ways of making Woodford Reserve is one of my favorite parts of my job,” said Master Distiller Chris Morris. “It allows us to explore new flavors with our bourbon.”

Toasted Oak Oat Grain is part of Woodford Reserve’s Distillery Series, which Morris created to push Woodford Reserve’s creative boundaries of whiskeys to the extreme. Each selection is masterminded by Morris and Assistant Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall and is available for purchase at the Woodford Reserve Distillery and limited Kentucky retailers. There are three annual releases of the Distillery Series.

Toasted Oat Oak Grain is available in 375ml bottles at 90.4 Proof. It is available for an SRP of $59.99 at the Woodford Reserve Distillery’s gift shop and at select Kentucky retailers.

What’s Selling Best on Drizly

Reposado tequila bumped light lager from the list of Drizly’s top 10 categories, based on share of sales.  Here’s the list of the Top 10 categories on Drizly:

  1. Red wine: 12%  share
  2. White wine: 11%  share
  3. Vodka: 9% share
  4. Bourbon: 6% share
  5. Champagne: 6% share
  6. Silver/blanco tequila: 4% share
  7. Scotch whisky: 3% share
  8. Hard seltzer: 3% share
  9. Rosé wine: 2% share
  10. Reposado tequila: 2% share

“Among the average unit price of the top 10 subcategories in 2022 versus 2021, all categories have seen year-over-year gains except vodka,” says Liz Paquette, Drizly’s head of consumer insights.

The subcategories that have seen the biggest year-over-year increases in average unit price are reposado tequila ($61.50 in 2022 versus $56.90 in 2021), Champagne ($53.80 versus $50.70), and Scotch whisky ($73.10 versus $71.60).

At the national level, the subcategories with the highest share of sales are remarkably consistent: Red wine, white wine, vodka, and bourbon rise to the top 4. During the summer months, white wine typically overtakes red wine as customers seek out something lighter to pair with warmer weather.

Wine Continues to Be King of the Hill

Wine remains a consistent seller on Drizly. It held four of the top 10 subcategories (red wine, white wine, Champagne, and rosé) over the past 12 months, which was also the case in the prior 12 month period in the same time of year. In the case of Champagne, the position has even strengthened. While Champagne remained the number five top-selling subcategory year-over-year, it saw share gains from five percent to six percent — the same share level as bourbon.

Retailers in certain locations should pay special attention to Champagne. New York City, Chicago, Miami, San Francisco, and San Diego all over-index in Champagne sales. In New Jersey and Boston, Champagne has the fourth-highest share compared to the fifth-highest share nationally, and in New York City, Champagne holds the third position.

On Drizly, the top-selling Champagne brands include Veuve Clicquot, Moët & Chandon, Dom Perignon, and Perrier-Jouët.

Liquor Wines Category Count

Liquor accounts for five of the top 10 top-selling subcategories in the past 12 months. In the 12 months prior (May 2020 to May 2021), four liquor subcategories made the list. This reflects the rise in popularity of reposado tequila, the newest liquor subcategory to make it in the top 10 over the past year.

New York City, Los Angeles, Denver, Dallas, and Miami all over-index for reposado tequila sales on Drizly compared to the rest of the country.

One factor helping tequila over the past couple of years of growth has been consumer willingness to spend more for tequila as they begin to understand it can be more than just a shooter. “We have really started to see premiumization take hold in the tequila category, with more upper-tier brands entering the space,” Paquette says, noting that tequilas priced $30 or more are seeing a greater share of growth than lower priced products. The top selling reposado tequilas include SKUs from Clase Azul, Casamigos, Hornitos, Espolón, and Teremana.

One interesting note in the liquor category is that vodka remains the number three best-selling subcategory on Drizly. In fact, even as the liquor category sees more subcategories take share from vodka, vodka’s overall share on Drizly has increased over the past 12 months from eight percent to nine percent.

Beer Lags, Except for Hard Seltzer

On the national level, hard seltzer is the only beer subcategory that makes it onto the list of the top 10 overall. This is a change from the 12 months prior, when light lager came in at number 10 with a two percent share.

Hard seltzer’s overall share of sales held steady year-over-year at three percent. Its position in the top 10 selling subcategories, however, dropped from seven to eight as other subcategories rose.

Looking at the percent share on a more local level tells a different story, however. In Boston and the state of New Jersey, light lager still has a place in the top 10 (number seven and number eight, respectively). In Boston and New Jersey, hard seltzer also holds a higher position of six versus eight.

Though hard seltzer growth has slowed, it’s still a top-performing category to keep in stock going into the summer months, when sales see year round peak. The top-selling hard seltzers on Drizly are White Claw, Truly Hard Seltzer, Bud Light Seltzer, Topo Chico Hard Seltzer, and Vizzy.

Vermont Lowers Taxes, Expanding Outlets for RtD Cocktails

Vermont Gov.  Phil Scott (R-VT) signed a bill reducing the tax rate for spirits-based ready-to-drink (RTD) products and expanding outlets where they can be sold.

Spirits-based RTD products have been available only in 81 state-operated stores. Now, these products will be available in more than 1,000 additional retail outlets.

The law will also reduce the tax on spirits-based RTD products to $1.10/gallon (implied excise tax rate based on markup, taxes and fees currently assessed by the state) from $7.68/gallon. It will become effective on July 1.

Twenty-four states already have lower tax rates for lower-abv spirits-based products. In fact, last year bills to reduce the state excise tax on spirits-based RTDs passed in Michigan and Nebraska. At least 12 states have introduced bills so far this year to create a more level playing field for spirits-based RTDs in support of consumers and small businesses in their communities.

“States across the nation are looking at ways to create a more level playing field for spirits-based ready-to-drink products, and Vermont is now one of the leaders in that area.  Treating products with the same or similar alcohol-by-volume fairly just makes sense, and this measure increases consumer convenience while supporting local businesses. We are grateful for Governor Scott’s action on this front,” said Jay Hibbard, SVP- State Government Relations, Distilled Spirits Council of the United States .

Heaven Hill’s New Distillery to Bear Historic Name

Heaven Hill broke ground on a $135 million distillery in Bardstown, Ky. – with a name paying tribute to the family-owned company’s original distillery that burned in a devastating fire in 1996.

The new, state-of-the-art Heaven Hill Springs Distillery is being built in the heart of the “Bourbon Capital of the World” at 1015 Old Bloomfield Pike, off Ky, 245, and is expected to be operational by the end of 2024. Initial production is slated for 150,000 barrels a year, and over time will have capacity to ramp up to producing 450,000 barrels annually. This will be in addition to the company’s distilling that occurs at the historic Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, which will continue to operate at full capacity of 450,000 barrels annually.

As part of Heaven Hill’s 2030 Environmental Sustainability Strategy, the new distillery has been designed to create a more environmentally conscious distilled spirits industry and ensure a thriving environment for generations to come. Heaven Hill Springs Distillery has been engineered to minimize water use to below industry benchmarks and reuse certain water streams. The site will use native plants and natural systems to manage stormwater runoff and improve habitat on the property. The distillery will include a wastewater pretreatment system to ensure discharged water exceeds environmental standards and greatly reduces the load on the city’s treatment plant. Heaven Hill also will plan to utilize energy creation and recovery, lessening the distillery’s demand on the city’s electrical grid.

The new distillery adds at least 38 jobs to the company’s 381 people already working in Bardstown at Heaven Hill’s Loretto Road bottling, aging and tourism facilities.

“We’re honored to celebrate this homecoming with a return to distilling in Bardstown to augment our overall bourbon-making capacity, as well as continue to make an impact in the Bardstown community,” Shapira said. “I’m proud to salute our history and the many Bardstown men and women who helped build our brands over the years by naming our new facility in honor of the original Old Heaven Hill Springs Distillery that my father and uncles founded in this community nine decades ago.”

“This is a significant day for Heaven Hill and Kentucky. The return of distilling operations to Nelson County is a return to the company’s roots, and the investment highlights the continued growth of bourbon and spirits in the commonwealth,” Gov. Andy Beshear said. “I am incredibly happy for the residents of Bardstown and the surrounding area, and I want to thank the leaders at Heaven Hill for this commitment to create new job opportunities and build the company’s presence in our state.”

Heaven Hill and Bardstown: ‘a shared and storied history’

Max Shapira’s father and four uncles, along with a group of Bardstown-area investors, founded “Old Heaven Hill Springs” distillery in 1935, and filled its first barrel on Dec. 13 of that year.

The company grew over the years and added several acclaimed brands, including Evan Williams, Elijah Craig, Larceny, Henry McKenna and more, which have earned numerous spirits-industry accolades. Master distillers of the Old Heaven Hill Springs Distillery over the years included Joe Beam, Harry Beam, Earl Beam, Parker Beam and Craig Beam.

In 1996, a fire resulted in the loss of the distillery, seven rickhouses and almost 100,000 barrels of whiskey. After the fire, Heaven Hill moved distilling to the historic Bernheim Distillery in Louisville. However the bottling and aging of whiskey along with other functions proudly continued in the Bardstown area where they remain today. In addition, in 2004, the company dedicated the Heaven Hill Bourbon Heritage Center—most recently expanded and renamed to the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience—that has become an award-winning focal point for the region’s bourbon tourism and has greeted millions of visitors over the years.
