Economy, Extreme Heat Bring Beer Industry to a Pause

Continued inflationary pressures, extreme heat, rising interest rates and recession fears, coupled with slower-than-expected sales in May, bring the industry to a pause after five months of positive ordering trends, National Beer Wholesalers Association said, with the Beer Purchasers Index at 46 and “at risk” inventory at 47 in June.  (Index numbers above 50 indicate expansion, below 50 indicate contraction.)

When looking at the comparison month of June 2021, it is worth noting that the industry was experiencing an extraordinary period of recovery for on-premise retail. The June 2022 results show a shift to a slightly more pessimistic sentiment compared to the previous two quarters of this year, NBWA said.  But  leaner inventories, reflected in the below 50 “at-risk” inventory measure, are a positive signal for the industry as it manages through unprecedented heat waves, price increases, uncertainty around consumer demand and the general economy.

The imports index stands as the only beer segment in expansion territory with a reading of 61 in June 2022, but it is 10 points lower than the June 2021 reading of 71.

The craft index at 33 is well below the June 2021 reading of 53. Craft continues to struggle as on-premise retailers are not rebuilding draft beer with the same number of tap handles as before.

The premium lights index posted a reading of 44, which is well below the June 2021 reading of 59. However, it is more in line with recent 2022 trends.

The premium regular segment index is at 36, below the June 2021 reading of 40.

The below premium segment is at 42, which is significantly higher than the June 2021 reading of 35. This is the only segment to see an increase year-over-year.

The FMB/seltzer index took another big hit, falling to 36 in June 2022 from the June 2021 reading of 69.

Finally, the cider segment remains below 50, with the June 2022 results at 30 compared to June 2021’s reading of 40.

On-Premise Continues Growth Ahead of July 4 — CGA

The last two weeks in the US On Premise have continued to see growth, with trends of +3% to June 11 followed by +2% to June 18, with check value and traffic both holding steady at +1% for the latest week. Velocity remains slightly ahead of last year at +5% versus 2021, with similar trends over recent weeks, according to CGA by NielsenIQ’s On Premise Impact report.

With July 4 approaching, CGA’s data reveals that while last year trends were largely flat on the Sunday (4th July), the Monday (5th July 2021) saw an uplift of +61% versus the average Monday in 2021 to date. This was driven mainly by an increase in traffic (+43%), with check value (+12%) also positive. These trends were experienced in both Eating (+58%) and Drinking (+70%) venues, and across all key states led by Illinois (+88%).

“The On Premise is likely to see an uptick in traffic and check value across the Independence Day long weekend, but what will be key is understanding which venues and dayparts are likely to see the largest uplift – and across which categories,” said Matthew Crompton, CGA Regional Director- North America.

Redbeast Announces New Kentucky Oak Edition

Redbreast Irish Whiskey, created by Irish Distillers at Midleton Distillery, unveils a dedicated whiskey collection for the United States. The American Oak series celebrates the influential and integral role of native wood in the production of Redbreast Irish Whiskey, giving provenance to the wood and unique American Oak influences to the whiskey.

The first limited release in the series, Redbreast Kentucky Oak Edition, is made from malted and unmalted barley, triple distilled in copper pot stills and matured in American Oak Bourbon barrels and Spanish Oloroso sherry butts, before being finished for a period of 3 to 7 months in naturally air-dried PEFC certified American Oak sourced from the Taylor Family’s Elk Cave Farm in Kentucky. These casks have been hand selected for finishing, using the best quality white oak, to impart additional sweet notes of vanilla and elevated wood spices.

“Redbreast is renowned for its heavy sherry influence,” explains Master Blender Billy Leighton. “This can often mean that its ex-bourbon counterpart is overlooked, even though Kentucky white oak barrels which have previously held bourbon are central to the Redbreast DNA. This series explores the role American white oak plays in the composition of Redbreast, and takes it one step further, with a final flourish in virgin casks to enable the wood contribution to truly take center stage.”

Seeking the best quality barrels, Leighton and the team at Midleton Distillery partnered with the owners of Elk Cave Farm, Clifton and sons Steven and Scott Taylor, to source high grade white oak from their 1,300-acre tree farm. As committed environmentalists, the Taylor family have championed sustainable farming practices since purchasing the land in 1959 and today are recognized across the country for the award-winning methods used on their farm. Under the Taylor family’s guardianship, Elk Cave Farm has become renowned for successfully applying the oak shelterwood system in their mature oak forests. Shelterwood, a forestry technique that emphasizes early tending of young oak seedlings by improving forest light conditions and reducing competitors, has proven successful in the Taylors’ mission to sustainably manage their oak forests. In addition, these productive oak forests will provide valuable wildlife habitat, clean water and fresh air today and for future generations.

Once felled, sawn and air dried, the oak was worked into 63 casks and shipped to Midleton Distillery, Co. Cork, to be filled with a bespoke batch of Redbreast whiskey. Leighton and his team diligently monitored the barrels until the perfect balance of flavor, aroma and wood contribution had been achieved.

Redbreast Kentucky Oak is bottled at 101 proof and will be exclusively available in the US beginning in June at a minimum  SRP of $95.99.

Stellum Spirits Introduces Inaugural StellumBlack Specialty Blends

Stellum Black specialty blends are an evolution in Stellum Spirits portfolio.  They are ongoing limited releases which incorporate rare barrels to create limited edition bourbons and ryes that deliver robust flavor alongside profound complexity.

Stellum Black are blended in steps and with smaller batches, allowing the team to use barrels or even just parts of barrels that are particularly unique while still having a major influence on the character of the whiskey.

The base for all Stellum Black specialty blends is a blend of Indiana bourbon/rye, which is then layered with older bourbons/ryes from Kentucky and Tennessee creating a unique everyday whiskey. The first two blends are Stellum Equinox Blend No. 1, which was completed on the Vernal Equinox and bottled at cask strength (117.26 proof) and Stellum Fibonacci Rye Blend No. 1, which celebrates teh Fibonacci sequence, a series of number, each the sum of the two previous numbers.  Six separate rye blends were combined in accordance with the sequence.  Bottled at cask strength (117.26).
