The Cost of Prohibition: 70 Die in Mexico from Tainted Alcohol

More proof, if it were needed, of the folly of trying Prohibition:  The New York Times reports at least 70 people have died in Mexico from drinking moonshine.  Mexican officials have closed breweries and prohibited the sale of alcohol in an attempt to prevent people from gathering in groups or having parties.

“It’s possible to begin to speculate that with a smaller supply of regulated alcohol, there’s a larger supply of unregulated alcohol,” said Gady Zabicky Sirot, director of the National Commission Against Addictions in Mexico.

The closure of those Mexican breweries also means that suppliers dependent upon Mexican production sources may see their supply chains run dry.  Most immediately at risk:  Heineken (Dos Equis, Tecate and Bohemia) and Constellation Brands (Modelo Especial, Corona and Pacifico).  If that happens, the folly of “global supply chains” will be even more apparent than it is today.
