To create the distinctively smoky aroma and taste of the tequila, the heart of the agave plant, the Piña, is roasted with mesquite for about seven days in small underground stone pits at the Patrón Hacienda in the Highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. The cooked agave is crushed slowly with a volcanic stone tahona wheel before the juice and agave fibers are placed together in pine wood fermenters and then distilled in small-capacity copper pot stills.
“Our goal with Gran Patrón Smoky was to produce a tequila that highlights the ancestral practice of the spirit and introduce Patrón fans to something delicious, yet unusual in flavor,” said Lee Applbaum, Global Chief Marketing Officer at Patrón Tequila. “Its perfectly balanced, very complex smoky flavor and smooth finish sets Gran Patrón Smoky apart in the ultra-premium tequila category.”
Gran Patrón Smoky (101 proof/$199) is packaged in a 750ml bottle that is both refined and distinctive with an elongated look. In a nod to the roasting process, the bottle is topped with a wooden stopper to symbolize the materials used in the roasting of the agave and is adorned with ‘smoke’ climbing the front label.
