Broad Branch Distillery Intros Supercollider Blueberry Rye

To produce this 118 proof, non-chill filtered whiskey, available only at the distillery starting May 15, fresh blueberries are co-fermented with rye grain. Then the entire mash is distilled and aged for seven long years. The final result is a whiskey that has bold, dark berry elements of port finished whiskey without the added sweetness of a port finish, the company says.

This single barrel whiskey comes in at 118 proof and is non-chill filtered. Aromas of dark berry jam and rye spice will greet you while the palate adds notes of dark chocolate mousse, black tea, and citrus oils. A finish loaded with tart berries and black tea will stick with you long after you finish your pour.

Wine Origins Alliance Urges EU, U.S. to End Retaliatory Tariffs

Retaliatory tariffs on wine have compounded the harm done to the global wine industry by Covid-19, Wine Origins Alliance members told members of Congress, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the U.S. Mission to the European Union, the EU Delegation to the United States and the European Commission during a virtual “fly-in.”

It’s at least the third time Wine Origins has urged an end to retaliatory tariffs imposed on products not involved in a trade dispute.  Earlier this year, WOA sent U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Katherine Tai a letter detailing several ongoing trade issues impacting the wine industry, including harmful retaliatory tariffs and the lack of effective name protection for wine regions. The Alliance also sent a letter last year calling on the EU Commissioner on Trade to avoid imposing retaliatory tariffs on wine.

Sonoma-Cutrer Marks 40 Years with Special Release, Photo Contest

Sonoma Cutrer‘s 40th Anniversary Chardonnay commemorative bottling celebrates the winery’s 40-year milestone in winemaking and represents a final collaboration between its founding and current winemakers.  Retail: $69.99 at select stores and the winery online.

To create this year’s Winemaker’s Release, Directors’ of Winemaking Bill Bonetti (1981-1990), Terry Adams (1991-2010), and Mick Schroeter (2010-Present) worked with Chardonnay Winemaker Cara Morrison (2005-Present) to artfully blend a Chardonnay that pays tribute to the winery’s mastery of the variety.

“The 40th Anniversary Winemaker’s Release showcases Sonoma-Cutrer’s Chardonnay style of crisp acidity balanced by ripe fruit and oak complexity,” said Morrison. “Collaborating so closely with Bill, Terry, and Mick was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is a privilege to dedicate this beautiful wine to our visionary founding winemaker Bill Bonetti who passed away peacefully just a few months after blending, and to continue to carry on his vision.”

In selecting the fruit for this wine, the winemakers chose grapes from three closely spaced blocks of Sonoma-Cutrer’s estate vineyards, Les Pierres, The Cutrer, and Vine Hill, which allowed them to “craft a varietal that is the ultimate expression of the winery’s classic style,” the company said.

In the cellar, Grand Cru winemaking techniques were used including minimal settling, bâttonage and sur lie aging for 10 months.  The wine was fermented and aged in new and used French oak sourced only from the Orleans Forest in central France. Sonoma-Cutrer’s longtime partners the Gauthier family purchased, split, milled and seasoned the wood, and under the winery’s strict guidelines, the barrels were produced by Remond, Rousseau & TW Boswell Cooperages.

Sonoma-Cutrer’s Winemaker’s Release 40th Anniversary Chardonnay presents beautiful aromas of ripe pear, citrus zest, and baked apple, with light mineral notes and a touch of matchstick for complexity, the company said adding that layers of spice, caramel, nougat, and pie crust are integrated throughout. Melon and Bosc pear along with lemon meringue flavors mingle with hints of nutmeg, clove, toasted nuts, and oak. The wine strikes an exceptional balance between being full-bodied and delicate, with a creamy mouthfeel highlighting the winery’s signature citrus acidity.

Sonoma-Cutrer’s Winemaker’s Release 40th Anniversary Chardonnay (13.9% ABV) will be available at an SRP of $69.99 at some select retail locations as well as direct from the winery at www.sonomacutrer.com.

In celebration of their 40th Anniversary, Sonoma-Cutrer is launching an online consumer photo contest, “Share Your First Time” (With Sonoma-Cutrer). Italian Trade Agency Taps KLG to Promote Italian Spirits

KLG Public Relations will represent the Italian Trade Agency and 20 Italian spirits brands to promote Italian Spirits in the U.S.

With the understanding that the current global pandemic has created obstacles around travel, the ITA and KLG Public Relations will curate and introduce unique tasting at the United States Bartender’s Guild and Tales of the Cocktail. “We are honored to see familiar names get back on board with the project and excited to collaborate with smaller brands new to the US market”, says Antonino Laspina, Italian Trade Commissioner, Executive Director of the USA.

Throughout the campaign, the agencies will work together to increase awareness of Italian spirits and the various spirit categories through strategic press outreach and product seeding.

In order to leverage the quality, versatility, and authenticity of Italian spirits, the key categories that will be amplified through this campaign are Amaro, an herbal, bittersweet spirit, and Grappa, Italy’s national spirit, as well as Limoncello and Vermouth, among other small niche categories.

Both the ITA and KLG PR will work to highlight all of these individual brands as it pertains to category, production methods, ingredients and of course, cocktails.
