Penna. Panel Clears Liquor Privatization Bill

The Pennsylvania House Liquor Control Committee approved an amendment to the State Constitution banning the commonwealth from making or selling liquor.  If the bill passes the legislature, it will go to the voters after at least a three-month wait.   If approved by voters, it would become effective 18 months after the vote.

Pennsylvania Licensed Beverage & Tavern Association said the bill is “dangerous for taverns, bars, and licensed restaurants” without knowing if their industries would be protected from unintended consequences.

Distilled Spirits Council Launches DestinationDistillery.com

Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS) launches Destination Distillery™ (www.destinationdistillery.com), a new website providing a tourism-driven experience and educational journey into the cultural heritage and history of spirits in America.

Visitors to the website will be able to explore many of America’s most famous distilleries as well as up-and-coming ones, state-by-state trails, economic impact of the spirits industry by state, and important sites connected to the history of distilling and spirits in our country.

“Destination Distillery is poised to become the go-to resource for spirits fans to dive in and discover the story behind their favorite beverages while finding new places and spirits along the way,” said Chris Swonger, DISCUS president/CEO. “By showcasing distillers large and small, Destination Distillery will serve as a unifier for our industry. Together, we’ll continue to drive tourism to local regions and further the economic contributions that all distillers make to their communities. Each distillery has a unique offering and local flavor, and we cannot wait for you to discover the story behind what’s in your glass.”

Visitors can locate distilleries based on the type of spirits they produce or by location. Categories of spirits are also listed, and each can be selected for an in-depth history of the category. Another unique part of the site is the “Stories” section which features information on historical milestones related to the spirits industry.

“With well over 30 spirits trails across the United States, the growth in spirits tourism is helping to transform communities surrounding distilleries and boost state and local economies,” said Philip McDaniel, CEO/co-founder, St. Augustine Distillery and chair of the DISCUS Craft Advisory Council. “This is the first tool of its kind to provide consumers with a comprehensive list to discover established distilleries and explore trails across the entire country – from the Pacific Northwest to the tip of Florida.”

Destination Distillery builds upon the foundation of the American Whiskey Trail, a tourism initiative created in 2004 by DISCUS in partnership with Mount Vernon and George Washington’s historic distillery. Over the nearly two decades since, there has been a proliferation of more than 2,000 small distilleries in cities and towns across the country.

Israel’s Yatir Winery Intros Darom

Yatir Winery introduces Darom, developed by Eran Goldwasser, who has been producing wine for Yatir for more than 20 years.

The Darom LOGO represents the anemone flower that blooms in the Negev and covers a significantly wide area, with a beautiful red blossom from mid-January to the end of February, as the red anemones’ blossoms are at their peak during this period.

“The south is an integral part of the history of the Jewish people and their connection to vineyards there have bloomed and flourished in the region since the dawn of history. It is a wonderful natural habitat in terms of climate and soil, and many high-quality local varieties can be cultivated here. How Summer Shandy changed everything for Leinenkugel’s: ‘This tastes like summer’

With the code name Project Riptide, Leinenkugel’s aimed to plug the summer-sized hole in its portfolio. But the end result did more than that. It created a new segment, redefined the summer seasonal in the beer industry and propelled Leinenkugel’s into the national spotlight.

Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy – bursting with juicy lemon flavor and aroma, light in taste and ABV but complex, inviting and eminently satisfying – first hit shelves in the spring of 2007. Almost immediately, it changed how consumers viewed the 139-old Wisconsin brewery and kicked off a flavor renaissance that prioritized refreshment and occasion. Now, more than 15 years since drinkers first fell in love with Summer Shandy, the brand remains the top-selling shandy in North America.  (Beer & Beyond)

Sazerac Acquires Lough Gill Distillery

Sazerac Co. acquired Hazelwood Demesne Ltd, owner of the Lough Gill Distillery, on the shores of Lough Gill in County Sligo, Ireland. Terms weren’t disclosed.

Sazerac, known for taking historic sites such as its Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky and its Sazerac House in New Orleans and restoring them to become world class operations, will fully develop the 100+ acre site, the original demesne of Hazelwood House, to create a world-class whiskey facility and visitor attraction, making it one of the most important tourism centers in the West of Ireland. Once complete, Lough Gill Distillery hopes to welcome up to 150,000 visitors annually and will create a homeplace for Sazerac’s Irish Whiskeys, Paddy and Michael Collins.

Additionally, Sazerac will significantly grow the footprint of Lough Gill Distillery through increasing the distillery’s capacity, adding warehousing capacity and expanding production and bottling lines. All current Lough Gill Distillery team members will remain with the business, and it is expected that Sazerac will increase employment after the expansion.  As part of the acquisition, Sazerac will continue the development of the Athrú brand, including global distribution.

In tandem with the acquisition, Lough Gill Distillery also announced that former Bushmills Master Blender, Helen Mulholland, is joining the team.  In 2018, she became the first woman to be inducted into the International Whisky Magazine Hall of Fame and has recently become the first woman to receive a Chairman’s Award for her outstanding contribution to the development of the Irish whiskey industry.

Mark Brown, Sazerac president/CEO, said, “With its rich history of distilling and storytelling, Ireland is an ideal homeplace for our whiskey business to flourish.  In particular, the history of the Lough Gill Distillery, dating back to the 18th century, will be an integral keystone in the restoration and storytelling of this site. We look forward to preserving the history, delighting our future visitors by the stories we share, and further expanding the growth opportunities for Paddy, Michael Collins and Athrú Whiskeys.”

David Raethorne, founder of the Lough Gill Distillery said “The acquisition will enable Lough Gill Distillery to fully develop as a world-class visitor destination and will have significant long-term economic and tourism benefits for Sligo, which, for me, was always a personal goal. In addition, the maintenance and preservation works undertaken to date on Hazelwood House (a house of national importance) have played an essential part in saving it from dereliction. This acquisition will ensure that Hazelwood House will be enjoyed and appreciated by generations to come, another key objective of the project. The Sazerac Co. announcement is a culmination of seven years of hard work and determination by the Board of Lough Gill Distillery and the wider team, delivering on our original 2015 vision, when we acquired the site. ”
