Monster Beverage Mulls Move Into Alcohol Drinks

Monster Beverage Corp. is considering entering the alcohol beverage business.  Contrary to what has been reported elsewhere, the potential move is not limited to either malt beverages, seltzers or hard ciders but also includes distilled spirits.

The move is not dependent on the expiration of a noncompete agreement with the Coca-Cola System, Rodney C. Sacks, chairman, told analysts.  That’s because Monster’s distribution agreement with the Coca-Cola System is limited to energy drinks, and it’s not at all certain Coca-Cola would be interested in a small volume alcohol beverage product.

“We’re looking at some at the moment,” Sacks said, adding:  “They may be a good opportunity.  It’s something we would be open to.”
