Texas Independence Week: 5 Historic Beers Beyond Lone Star and Shiner

Here in Austin, you’ve probably heard of two survivors: Lone Star Beer, born in 1940, and a cultural touchstone for armadillos and outlaws. And Shiner, created in 1909 and one of the few Texas breweries to survive Prohibition.

But there were several more important Texas beers during this period. As we kick off our Texas Independence Week series, here are 5 historic Texas beers beyond Lone Star and Shiner … (Austin Statesman)

 

Cascade Brewing’s Art Larrance Is No Good at Day Drinking

Larrance co-founded Portland Brewing, one of the city’s four original craft breweries, in 1986. One year prior, he helped lobby state lawmakers to pass legislation enabling breweries to sell beer on site, an act that had been banned since Prohibition. He also helped establish the Oregon Brewers Festival, which is now in its 32nd year and attracts 60,000 guests annually.

Still, his greatest professional accomplishment might be Cascade, which is widely considered a pioneer in American barrel-aged sour beer.  (VinePair)
