Winebow Imports Named Exclusive U.S. Importer of Cantine Nicosia.

Cantina Nicosia was founded in 1898 and is under the leadership of the fifth generation. It was one of the original wineries to settle on Mount Etna, which “has become one of the most exciting, talked-about appellations in all of Italy, rivaling the likes of Montalcino and the Langhe. Today there are more than 100 producers making wines on one of the active largest volcanoes in the world,” said Ian Downey, EVP, Winebow Imports.

Cantine Nicosia currently owns 85 hectares of vineyards on Mount Etna, where it farms all its own grapes. Their state-of-the-art 20,000-square-foot winery in the town of Trecastagni includes an ultra-modern bottling line. Located nearby is the single vineyard of Monte Gorna, which lies at the foot of an extinguished crater on the Etna volcano. The winery also owns 80 hectares in Vittoria, an appellation in southeastern Sicily, where they have been growing grapes for more than 50 years. Sicilian enologist Maria Carella, who has been with the winery since 2008, produces all the company’s wines.

Winebow Imports will carry the following from Cantine Nicosia:

  • Lenza di Munti – Etna Rosso (SRP: $25), Etna Bianco (SRP: $25), Etna Rosato (SRP: $25), and Nerello Mascalese Organic (SRP: $17)
  • Contrada Monte Gorna – Etna Bianco Organic (SRP: $32), Etna Rosso Organic (SRP: $32)
  • Sabbie di Sutta – Cerasuolo di Vittoria Organic (SRP: $25), Frappato Organic (SRP: $20)

‘Bring Every Bottle Back’ the New Imperative for Beverage Marketers

This is the choice bev/al execs face:  Invest in innovative packaging or improve recyclability.  That Hobson’s choice is being driven by rising input costs and growing sustainability concerns, according to analysts at Rabobank.

When it comes to recycling, the U.S. is failing miserably.  Japan, Brazil and China all recycle 98% or more of aluminum cans, Europe recycles 76.4%, and the U.S. just 52.1%.  The picture on recycling PET bottles is even worse — Japan recycles 92.2%, China, 75%; Europe, 63.7%; Brazil, 55%, but the U.S. recycles only 30.6%.   At least when it comes to recycling glass bottles, the U.S. isn’t dead last: At a 54.6% glass bottle recycling rate, the U.S. follows Japan (86.2%), Europe (78.6), but leads Brazil (47%) and China (35%).

Why the high recycling rate in Japan?  It is among the early adopters of the extended producer responsibility framework, which shifts the responsibility for a product’s post-consumer lifecycle to companies from municipalities.

The Rabobank analysts expect the extended producer responsibility system to spread in the United States, following its adoption in Maine in 2021, followed by Oregon.  Currently, Rabobank says, 17 states are considering expanding the EPR regime to food and beverage packaging.

Improving recycling rates will change the mindset involved in packaging design.  One example:  Sprite and 7UP have ditched traditional colored bottles in favor of transparent, colorless designs.  This doesn’t change the amount of plastic, but makes it a lot easier to recycle.  Another example:  South Korea has moved toward label-less packaging.

Rabobank expects net-zero ambitions  — a result of government changes , investor pressure and sourcing innovations to drive decisions about the packaging mix.  You see this already, with companies such as Heineken and Pernod Ricard committing to achieving net-zero emissions targets, including their supply chains.  For Diageo to meet its stated goal of 100% recyclable packaging by 2030, it will need to significantly reduce glass bottle weights or shift some product to PET.

One of the more fascinating developments is Lasso Loop, a machine that is slightly larger than a dishwasher.  It sorts, cleans and palletizes up to seven common packaging materials, which the company repurchases from the consumer at a pre-determined price.  Lasso Loop, says Rabobank, “has the potential to create a paradigm shift in packaging sustainability performance.”

Domaine Bousquet Becomes First Winery Outside U.S. to Earn ROC Status

Domaine Bousquet, Argentina’s largest producer and exporter of wines made exclusively from certified organic fruit, has earned Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC) status from the 501(c)3 Regenerative Organic Alliance. Domaine Bousquet becomes one of only four wineries to do so to date, and the first outside the United States to meet ROC’s stringent requirements. The other three wineries are Fetzer Vineyards (CA), Tablas Creek Vineyard (CA) and Troon Vineyard (OR). ROC status pertains to food/produce, fiber, and botanical ingredients.

“Individual farmers and agricultural entities seeking to fight climate change and campaign for social justice are to be respected, but they cannot move the needle on their own. If we are to make a meaningful difference, then we must work together, and ROC certification effectively unites all sectors of farming,” said Anne Bousquet, co-owner/CEO, Domaine Bousquet

Founded in 1997, Domaine Bousquet has farmed organically from the get-go. Wines are made from 100% certified organic grapes, with some, such as Domaine Bousquet’s Virgen collection and Alavida Kosher Malbec, also USDA Organic-certified. All Domaine Bousquet wines are vegan-certified. Fair for Life-certified, the winery provides worker educational opportunities at its remote Gualtallary Andean home, has helped build new roads, instituted a strong employee benefits system, and emphasizes promoting from within. Domaine Bousquet is also a founding member of the London-based Sustainable Wine Roundtable, whose goal is to create a global standard for sustainability within the wine industry.
