Ole Smoky Launches 1st Expression Honoring Family

James Ownby Reserve Tennessee Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a 94-proof whiskey is aged in American virgin charred oak barrels and filtered utilizing the Lincoln County Process, passing through sugar maple charcoal before aging. Less than 200 barrels of James Ownby Reserve will be released this month.

Ownby is the fifth generation great-grandfather of Ole Smoky Distillery’s Founder, Joe Baker.  He enlisted in the Army at 17, served six tours of duty and was a member of the renowned ‘Overmountain Men’ regiment under the command of Colonel John Sevier in the Battle of Kings Mountain – the battle which Thomas Jefferson fittingly deemed ‘The turn of the tide of success,’ in the Revolutionary War,” said Baker.

In the late 1800s, James set down roots in East Tennessee, just a stone’s throw from where Ole Smoky operates the distillery today on the edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Ownby family became known as one of the original families who settled in the area and brought their knowledge of distilling.

Cooperstown Distillery Completes $430,000 Expansion

The project consisted of building a two-story, 7,520 square foot warehouse adjacent to its former warehouse which then was reconfigured for increased production which requires additional grain. The distillery purchased machinery and equipment which allows the finished product to age and mature on site. That enabled the distillery to increase full time employment from seven to 14 employees, providing jobs for veterans and low- and moderate-income individuals.

Founded by Eugene Marra in 2013, Cooperstown Distillery produces hand-crafted artisanal spirits sourced by grains grown by local farmers. The distillery won a gold medal in the 2017 Denver International Spirits Competition and 50 other awards in the past five years. Steady growth brought about a need to expand its warehouse and production facility at 11 Railroad Avenue.

The expansion was supported with a $100,000 award from New York State’s Community Development Block Grant program and an $85,000 construction grant from Empire State Development.

Leveraging its proprietary AI models and data engines, customers receive variable upgrades with premium wines worth at least the same or more than they paid, with rare bottle upgrades often worth up to $10,000being awarded every day.

“People don’t actually want the lowest price or biggest discount when they buy a bottle of wine, what they actually want is the greatest value,” says Jeffrey Shaw, Underground Cellar’s Founder & CEO. “After seeing the harm that discounts were causing to wine brands I knew that the solution would be to drive excitement by upgrading customers’ purchases to more expensive, rare, and large-format bottles.”

To further integrate the technology-first wine platform, successful tech start-up leader and former Google executive, Jeff Hardy joins the team as COO and takes a seat on the board.

“This new infusion of capital will allow us to enhance our unique gamified platform, further deepen our relationships with the world’s most coveted and prestigious wineries, and unlocks our ability to triple the size of our team by the end of the year,” says Jeff Hardy, Underground Cellar COO.
