New Jersey May Expand Liquor Licenses

More restaurants in New Jersey may be able to sell beer, wine or spirits.

That’s assuming a bill that cleared the Assembly Oversight, Reform and Federal Relations Committee becomes law.  Currently, there can only be one license for every 3,000 people in a municipality.

The bill would end the strict limits that date to the Repeal of Prohibition.  New licenses would cost up to $10,000 a year but could not be sold.  Existing licenses can be sold and would be grandfathered under the plan.

Those existing licenses would be eligible for tax credits if their value goes down, but some operators say that isn’t enough.
