That’s a change from existing guidelines of 14 drinks a week. Still, while lowering the number of drinks in a week, it allows up to four drinks on any one day.
Mathematical modeling showed that at that level of drinking, a person’s risk of dying from alcohol-related disease and injury was about 1%.
In releasing the guidance, Australia’s National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC) said new evidence has led to greater certainty between alcohol consumption and the risk of developing a number of different cancers as well as “increased uncertainty about any protective benefits of drinking alcohol.”
The guidelines apply whether one is male or female.
Other guidelines say people under 18 shouldn’t drink alcohol nor should women who are pregnant or planning to get pregnant.
