Maryland Official, Legislators Feud Over Alcohol

A bill to spin out the regulation of alcohol and tobacco from the Maryland State Comptroller’s Office has been denounced by the Comptroller as a political stunt and as payback for his proposal last year to modernize alcohol regulation to aid craft brewers instead of “out-of-state beer cartels.”

Sponsors of the bill say the plan would give greater emphasis to the public health and public safety effects of alcohol use.
