Jose Cuervo Tradicional announces a new annual film series that spotlights the storied traditions of Día De Muertos (Day of the Dead), giving viewers a glimpse into the festivities surrounding this Mexican holiday, a joyful event when the dead return to visit their living friends and family.
Each year, Cuervo Tradicional will partner with a Mexican filmmaker to capture authentic Día de Muertos moments from different parts of Mexico, telling the story of these regional celebrations through the characters that bring each festival to life.
Cuervo Tradicional’s first documentary, Día De Muertos: Lake Pátzcuaro (run time: 0:5:21), is told by emerging Mexican filmmakers, Mónica Álvarez and Paola Villaneuva, and unveils an intimate look at the story of Lake Pátzcuaro, a town located in Michoacán and known for its vibrant Día De Muertos festivities. The story is told through four narratives:
— Harvesting of the marigold flowers
–Preparation of the traditional pan de muerto (bread of the dead)
–Conversations with fishermen who guide spirits home
–Noche de Muertos (Night of the Dead) — the local community’s all-night celebration that includes offerings to honor the dead and toasts with tequila
Día De Muertos: Lake Pátzcuaro will screen at the San Diego International Film Festival (Oct 15-20) and the Morelia International Film Festival (Oct 18-27), but it’s currently available on Cuervo.com.
