The move was a squeaker – it passed the Florida House by just one vote, 58-57. It was praised by the Distilled Spirits Council, which noted the “Take Down the Wall” bill allows spirits to be sold alongside wine and beer in grocery stores. Currently, retailers must segregate spirits into a side store separated by a wall, inconveniencing consumers.
“Florida consumers want a modern marketplace where they can purchase spirits, wine and beer at the same time and same place – like in most states,” said Distilled Spirits Council VP Jay Hibbard. “We applaud the Florida legislature for listening to its constituents and urge Governor Scott to sign this pro-consumer legislation.”
Wal-Mart and Target, among others, supported the bill. Independent package store owners opposed it, saying it would drive them out of business.
