It’s a global initiative of the parent company, Suntory Holdings. Suntory’s plastic bottles currently include about 10% recycled PET. The company plans to lift that ratio to between 60% and 70% and make up the rest with plant-based resin that can also be recycled.
“It is Suntory’s founding promise to coexist with people and nature. We will tackle the plastics problem by contributing to the realization of a circular economy and by bringing together our advanced technology to lead the world in finding effective solutions to this global issue,” said Takeshi Niinami, Chief Executive Officer of Suntory Holdings.
Suntory expects the recycled bottles to cost the same as bottles produced from crude oil-based plastic.
The move follows Suntory’s introduction of its FtoP Direct Recycle Technology, a breakthrough process that streamlines making PET bottles from PET bottles.
