Anchorage Rejects 10% Alcohol Tax Increase

Distilled Spirits Council applauded the Anchorage Municipal Assembly for voting against a 5% alcohol tax increase, which with escalators would have grown to 10% over the next four years, as well as being in addition to several other taxes levied at the federal, state and local levels.

“With more than half of the shelf price of a bottle of distilled spirits already paying a tax or fee of some kind, Anchorage spirits consumers already pay more than their fair share,” said Distilled Spirits Council Vice President Adam Smith. “We appreciate the municipal assembly listening to their constituents and voting against this dramatic tax hike.”

Working with an industry coalition that includes suppliers, wholesalers, hotels, restaurants and retailers, the Council alerted Anchorage residents of the dramatic tax increase, which led to it being voted down.
