Beer wholesalers in Erie, Pa., Chippewa Falls, Wis., and Minnesota, among other Midwestern locations, halted deliveries thanks to an historic freeze. Kegged beer in trucks in Minnesota frozen Tuesday, and that was before temperatures reached their lowest.
In Minneapolis, the temperature hit 26 degrees below zero. And in the wind and the “feels like” temperature was 53 below zero. Beer freezes at roughly 32 above zero, depending on the alcohol content.
U.S. Postal Service halted mail deliveries across much of the Midwest owing to the record lows. Colleges and schools, including Indiana University and Purdue University, cancelled classes, as did many public schools.
Many parts of the Midwest were actually colder than in Antarctica, where the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station his a balmy minus 25 degrees. By contrast, Fargo, N.D., was 31 below zero.
