Plata Wine Partners hires Jessica Valenzuela as production planning manager and Shane Owens is named national strategic accounts director, East.  Both are new positions.  She joins from Saintsbury Winery in Napa-Carneros, where she was an enologist.  Owens previously was with Precept Wine, Seattle.

Plata also promoted Alison Crowe to vp-winemaking and Maria Janovich to director of finance and accounting.

Brandsway Creative is now the agency of record for the RtD cocktail brand Le Coqtail.

Marty Maloney leaves the p.r. shop at Molson Coors Beverage Co. after seven years, to take a new role as VP-Consumer with Zeno Group.

Vino Valut Gets Private Equity Funding

Manhattan West Private Equity Fund said it completed its growth equity investment in Vino Vault and is now its largest shareholder.  Vino Vault, which has already completed five acquisitions, plans to acquire additional companies. 

Vino Vault offers a comprehensive wine storage network for general enthusiasts and serious collectors, providing a full suite of services, including concierge-style wine storage, expert inventory organization, collection analysis and turnkey auction management services. 

In a related development, Vino Vault hired Jeff Smith as Chief Wine Officer.

“Our goal is to become the nation’s leading wine storage and value-added ancillary services provider,” said Jeff Anthony, President and CEO at Vino Vault. “The funding and intellectual capital we’ve gained from Manhattan West will help us redefine the way people think about and manage their wine collections. Manhattan West’s expertise in serving high-net-worth individuals and families, in addition to its familiarity and experience in our industry, is critical in driving us toward our mission to make wine collecting simple, enjoyable, and hassle-free.” 

Vino Vault has locations in Los Angeles, New York City, and Dallas.  It recently acquired La Cave Warehouse in February 2022, the New York Wine Storage Company in January 2022, and expects to announce new acquisitions soon. With an objective of having a presence in every major market in the world, Vino Vault’s latest capital infusion, advised by Fluential Partners, will enable the penetration of new markets across the U.S., as well as identify new opportunities in Europe. Additionally, the company plans to deploy capital toward building best-in-class technology offering a seamless user experience to all clients globally.  

The Manhattan West Private Equity Fund is an active value-add investor in lower middle market companies focused in the media, entertainment, sports, and consumer sectors. The Fund is currently open to new investors with plans to close later this year.

Eastside Distilling Net Sales Jump 19%, But Firm Swings to a Loss

Eastside Distilling Inc., Portland, Ore.,  reports net sales rose 18.8% to $3.74 million, but its year-earlier profit of $3.7 million was transmuted into a $2.07 million loss.  The company’s earnings release did not explain the cause of the loss. , reports

In terms of volume, Eastside shipped 16% fewer cases than a year ago.  It also took a special one-time charge to account for termination of its Redneck Riviera license termination and closing of its tasting room.  Teh company also reported its Craft C&B margins were lower owing to reduced sales and higher expenses.

On-Premise Sales Grow 3% in Week

Key days such as Cinco de Mayo, the Kentucky Derby, and even sporting events such as the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix have driven velocity uplifts across key cities and states across the U.S., according to CGA.

On Thursday May 5, Cinco De Mayo provided a 19% increase versus the average Thursday in the year to date. Texas saw increases of 30% versus the average Thursday YTD, driven largely by traffic which was up +24% while California experienced an uplift of +17%, with traffic up by +12%.

The Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 7, had a positive impact on both the state of Kentucky and its host city of Louisville. Kentucky saw trends of +16% versus the average Saturday in the year to date, driven by check value increase of +18%. While in Louisville, check value increases of +34% lead to a velocity uplift of +23% on the day. Over in Miami, the most recent weekend saw the first Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix take place, with the city experiencing a double-digit uplift across Thursday, Friday and Saturday versus average, with both traffic and check value positive.

For the entire U.S. after a slight decline in the week to April 30 (-1%), velocity in the latest week improves as both check value (+2%) and traffic (+1%) drive growth of +3% to May 7.

 

All key states remain positive vs 2021, resulting in trends of +18% for the US vs last year. States which still had COVID-19 restrictions in place last year are currently performing strongly in comparison. In New York velocity is up +39%, with Illinois up +32% and California up +23% vs 2021.

Meanwhile the states that had little to no restrictions in 2021 growth is slower but still slightly positive (Florida +2%, Texas +4%) vs 2021

Spirits RTD COLAs Slow from 2021: bw166

Labels approvals for seltzers has slowed.  Approvals  are  running at 208 a month and Alcohol & Tobacco Tax & Trade Bureau has approved 3,315 labels so far this year, bw166 reports.  That’s down from 8.864 labels in 2019.

Spirits products has stabilized at around 200 COLAs a month, beer-based products are decelerating but the’re a slight uptick  for 2wine.
