600 Attendees Joined NBWA’s Virtual Legis Conference; Convention to Be in Person

Distributors will attend almost 350 meetings with members of Congress and Hill staff during the rest of this week.

“After cancelling last year’s conference, we knew that the advocacy show had to go on, even virtually,” said NBWA President/CEO Craig Purser. “We always embrace the opportunity to share valuable knowledge and insights with distributors in hopes to better equip them with the tools and skills they need to advocate for themselves year-round. At a time that continues to challenge the industry, these skills could not be more important.”

“The willingness and enthusiasm from members of Congress to participate in these virtual Hill meetings tells us what NBWA knows so well—that beer distributors are valuable members of their communities and are essential to their local economies,” said Laurie Knight, NBWA EVP-Government Affairs. “We just want to say ‘thank you’ again to legislators who are taking time out of their schedules to sit down with our beer distributors this week. We hope these meetings provide legislators a better understanding of the opportunities and obstacles their beer distributor constituents face.”

NBWA plans to conduct its 84th Annual Convention and Trade Show in person in Las Vegas, Nev., on October 3-6, 2021. Additionally, on November 15-17, 2021, NBWA will host its Next Generation Success in Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla.

Craig Purser: Why Wholesalers Have to Be Advocates

“Many of your hopes are dependent upon the policies adopted by Congress.  Ask your lawmakers to support policies that benefit your benefit. Your ability to hire people, keep trucks on the road, etc., comes back to advocacy,” Craig Purser, president/CEO, National Beer Wholesalers Association, said during NBWA’s first virtual Legislative Conference.

When the pandemic started NBWA shifted its priorities to make sure beer wholesalers were deemed essentials, Purser said.  A lot has happened since then in the political election, and elections often result in a change of priorities as new leaders take control.  This year we have a new president, new congressional committee chairs, new administration officials.

Purser ticked off five reasons why this conference was particularly important:

  • With the nation divided in ways we haven’t been before, protests stop being a virtue when individuals cross the line and become rioters.  “We have a duty to engage in the democratic process responsibly.  Participation in this conference demonstrates to members of Congress that responsible public advocacy can’t be derailed,” he said.
  • This year’s topics for Congress include alcohol regulation in the U.S.; federal tax policy and advancing policies that will get more drivers changed to address the driver labor shortage.
  • NBWA is also opposed alcohol shipping through USPS.  “Your letter carrier shouldn’t be your bartender.”
  • CBD and marijuana policy.
  • Obtaining a tax credit for expired food and beverage.

Tequila Don Julio Sets Up $1 Million Fund to Make Community Stronger

The Tequila Don Julio Fund will commit $1 million in aid over the next four years to charities whose missions help our community grow stronger.  It will make its first contribution on Cinco de Mayo through a combined donation of $125,000 that will be distributed to No Us Without You LA, a nonprofit organization that provides food security for Mexican hospitality workers in the greater Los Angeles area, and Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation, an advocacy and action nonprofit created by and for restaurant workers.

Through its programs, Tequila Don Julio hopes to inspire people to visit and support their favorite local establishments again. In an online sweepstakes and real-world instant win game promotions, the luxury tequila brand will release $125,000 worth of “Don Julio Cincos” – digital and physical vouchers beautifully designed by Mexican Artist Claudio Límon and inspired by Tequila Don Julio’s Mexican heritage and our support of the hospitality industry. Each one unlocks $5 that consumers are encouraged to spend at a local bar or restaurant of their choice on Cinco de Mayo.

“Tequila Don Julio is a brand rooted in devotion and committed to those we call our familia,” says Christina Choi, Senior VP-Tequila, Diageo North America. “Every day we aim to emulate the values of our founder by serving, supporting and celebrating the people who made Tequila Don Julio the brand it is today. This Cinco de Mayo, beyond our donation to two amazing nonprofits supporting hospitality workers, we hope to also inspire people to support their favorite bars and restaurants themselves.”
