Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame Ceremony Cancelled for 2021

Progress is being made against Covid, but the coronavirus is still taking its toll, the latest being the cancellation of this year’s Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame ceremony.

“While we are encouraged with vaccination rates and declining cases in Kentucky, the Kentucky Distillers Association Board of Directors does not want to diminish this elite event or take a chance and possibly endanger any of our industry’s legends, their families and friends,” Eric Gregory, KDA president, said.

Created by KDA in 2001, the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame recognizes individuals and organizations that have made a significant and transformational impact on Bourbon’s stature, growth and awareness.

It is the highest honor given by the signature industry and is presented annually during the Kentucky Bourbon Festival in Bardstown in September.

Beer Purchasers Index Shows Recovery Underway

As the U.S. reopens, beer distributors have been restocking, something brought into dramatic relief by the National Beer Wholesalers Association‘s Beer Purchasers Index, which stands at 79, more than twice April 2020’s all-time low of 54.

Looking across the segments for April:

  • The index for imports continued into expansion territory for a reading of 74 in April 2021, well above the 32 reading from April 2020.
  • The craft index posted a reading of 64 for April 2021, compared to a dismal reading of 14 in April 2020.
  • The premium lights segment posted a reading of 69 following a reading of 44 from April 2020.
  • Regular domestic beer segment’s index of 56 is also significantly above April 2020’s reading of 40.
  • The below premium segment reading is at 51, only a few points higher than the April 2020 reading of 47.
  • The FMB/seltzer segment continued to outperform all other segments in April 2021 with a reading of 90, compared to 72 from April 2020.
  • The cider segment remains below 50, posting an index reading of 44 compared to last April’s reading of 17.

“This month’s survey cycles the April 2020 survey, the month when widespread quarantines brought the on-premise beer business to a standstill,” said Lester Jones, NBWA chief economist.  “The April 2021 reading shows significant recovery from last year, but relative to April readings going back to 2015, the current index appears to fall in line with the industry’s long-running measures.”

B-F’s Benriach Distillery to Open Its 1st Visitor Center

Benriach Distillery (Brown-Forman) will open its first-ever visitor center in Scotland’s Speyside region May 21.

Initially, the new visitor center will offer two tasting experiences which will appeal to both single malt lovers and those at the beginning of their whisky journey. The ‘Sense of Flavour’ tasting ($27.87) will delve into the production process at Benriach, before zoning in on the distillery’s classic and smoky expressions at 10 and 12 years old. Visitors will also have the chance to explore their own flavor preferences with whisky by trying Benriach in simple cocktail serves.

Additionally, a deconstructed cask tasting ($62.71) will be available for those who wish to dive deeper into the distillery’s creative heritage of eclectic cask maturation. The ‘Barrels, Butts and Barriques’ experience will offer visitors the chance to taste five individual cask types, culminating in a tasting of the Benriach 21 Year Old – showcasing how Benriach’s Master Blender Rachel Barrie builds rich layers of flavour in a range of fruit-forward single malts.

Visitors are required to pre-book their preferred tasting online before attending the distillery, which will open initially on a weekly basis from Friday – Sunday, 10:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Distillery tours of the production site will return when it is safe to do so.

Covid Update: Fully Vaccinated Adults 65 and Older 94% Less Likely to Be Hospitalized with COVID-19– CDC

Centers for Disease Control & Prevention said fully vaccinated adults 65 years and older were 94% less likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 than people of the same age who were not vaccinated.

People 65 and older who were partially vaccinated were 64% less likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 than people who were not vaccinated. People were considered “partially vaccinated” two weeks after their first dose of mRNA vaccine and “fully vaccinated” two weeks after their second dose.

These are the first real-world findings in the United States confirming clinical trial data showing mRNA vaccines prevent severe COVID-19 illness. The findings provide additional support for CDC’s recommendation for COVID-19 vaccination among people 65 and older in the U.S. population under the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the applicable COVID-19 vaccine as the risk for severe illness with COVID-19 increases with age, with older adults at highest risk.

The assessment looked at hospitalizations in two U.S. hospital networks covering 24 hospitals in 14 states. Vaccine effectiveness was assessed by comparing the odds of COVID-19 vaccination among hospitalized people who tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19 (these were case-patients) versus those who tested negative (these were controls). Among 417 participants in the assessment, there were 187 case-patients and 230 controls. Half of the patients were more than 75-years-old.

Also noteworthy, while early reports from Israel also documented the real-world effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccination, including among older adults, those reports only looked at vaccination with Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. In this CDC assessment, both Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccine products were equally represented.

As expected, the assessment confirmed that vaccination provided no protection to people who had received their first dose fewer than two weeks earlier. It takes two weeks for the body to form an immune response after vaccination.

Citadelle Gin Intros a New Expression

Citadelle Gin introduces its newest gin, Citadelle Jardin d’été, a permanent addition to the Citadelle portfolio. Inspired by a French garden cultivated by Debbie Gabriel, wife of Citadelle Founder Alexandre Gabriel, Jardin d’été is made with melon flesh, whole lemon, yuzu zest and more orange peel, in addition to the 19 botanicals used to make Citadelle Original.

Citadelle Gin Jardin d’été is available in the US as of April 2021 and bottled at 41.5% alcohol by volume (83 proof) for a suggested retail price of $24.99 for a 750ml bottle.

The pioneer of French gin, and a longtime favorite of bartenders, Citadelle has been crafting authentic gin de terroir in a small village in Charente, France for 25 years. To celebrate its latest opus, Citadelle took a cue from the garden at the Château de Bonbonnet, Citadelles home in the southwest of France.
