Fieldwork Brewing Establishes a Community Fund Panel

Fieldwork Brewing Co. established a Community Fund Committee led by Fieldwork staff members from each of the brewery’s seven locations throughout Northern California in an effort to donate funds to noteworthy local non-profit organizations.

For the first two quarters, the Fieldwork Community Fund Committee identified organizations who are making an immediate and substantial impact to help alleviate the many challenges communities are facing across the region. Over the course of 2020 (4th Quarter) and 2021 (1st Quarter), the Fieldwork Community Fund Committee has donated a total of $40,000 to 11 non-profits.

“During such difficult times, we’ve sought out measurable ways that we can be there for people most affected by the pandemic,” says Matthew Porcelli, General Manager of Fieldwork Brewing (Berkeley Taproom) & Chair of the Fieldwork Community Fund Committee. “We care deeply about how to positively reach diverse communities and have funds directly assist those with urgent needs such as hot meals, showers, laundry services, crisis intervention and prevention services, reading materials for at-risk K-3rd grade students, as well as many other inspiring initiatives we really want to support.”

Over 10 Fieldwork team members at its various locations are key voices leading the Fieldwork Community Fund Committee. Each team member recommends various non-profits that the committee then votes on to decide which specific organizations receive donations.

Beneficiaries of the donations include nonprofits working to help survivors of sexual assault and abuse, food banks, helping disadvantaged and homeless youth, providing art classes to seniors in long-term care communities, food production, and summer reading programs.

DISCUS, Women of Vine & Spirits Launch Free Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response Training

Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S. launched an ongoing training series to prevent harassment in the alcohol beverage industry. We condemn the perpetuation of harassment of any kind and stand in solidarity with those who have been impacted.

RAINN, the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization, will provide their community and the industry as a whole with trauma-informed education to increase awareness around sexual misconduct and strategies for prevention. This customized training funded by WOTVS, held in April 2021, was open to the public and covered topics such as bystander intervention, how the brain processes trauma, and sexual violence and harassment prevention and response.

With the goal of providing trainings with RAINN as part of an ongoing initiative to support those in the alcohol beverage industry, we committed to join WOTVS in the effort to fund additional training and education.

Through this partnership, RAINN will provide multiple training sessions tailored for all sectors across all tiers of the alcohol beverage industry. Each level of the training will be held five times on the WOTVS platform and will be open to the public.

Level 1: Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response Training: Participants will be educated on the complexities of sexual misconduct, with an emphasis on addressing misconceptions, understanding the role that participants play in shaping healthy communities, and identifying resources for those directly and indirectly impacted by these issues.

Level 2: Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response Training: Strategies for Creating Safe, Healthier Communities. Building on the education and skills learned in Level 1, this segment aims to provide participants with enhanced knowledge and skills around intervention and prevention strategies for creating safer, healthier communities.

Participants will receive a resource guide that bridges the gap between the concepts discussed and actionable skills specific to roles of prevention and response.

The sessions are:

Monday, June 28: 9am PST/ 12pm EST

Wednesday, July 14: 12pm PST / 3pm EST

Wednesday, August 25: 7:30am PST/ 10:30am EST

Wednesday, September 22: 9am PST / 12pm EST

Monday, October 4: 12pm PST / 3pm EST

In announcing the series, DISCUS added that “If you or someone you know has been affected by sexual violence, the National Sexual Assault Hotline provides free, anonymous 24/7 support via phone at 800.656.4673 or chat via the online hotline. RAINN’s website (www.rainn.org) also provides information on supporting loved ones who are survivors, helping yourself heal if you’ve been directly affected by sexual violence, and how to be part of creating safer communities.

US Total Beverage Alcohol Consumption in 2020 Was Largest Volume Gain in Nearly 20 Years: ISWR

Covid apparently drove us to drink.

Total beverage alcohol volume in the US last year was up 2%, the largest gain for alcohol consumption in the U.S. since 2002, according to new findings from IWSR.

IWSR forecasts a more moderate growth rate over the next five years as normalisation returns.

“A key driver of US beverage alcohol consumption is flavor,” says Brand Rand, IWSR’s COO of the Americas. “Flavored subcategories – from beer to vodka to US whiskey – are significantly outperforming traditional non-flavored sub-categories. Flavor is also the top consumer driver of the fast-growing ready-to-drink (RTD) category, and that’s likely creating a halo effect on total alcohol as well.”

IWSR’s analysis of the US beverage alcohol market by category:

Spirits posts largest volume increase since 1990

Value increased as well.

Within the category, agave-based spirits grew 15.9% in volume in 2020, overtaking rum to be the third-largest spirits category in the U.S. behind vodka and whisky.

Cognac/Armagnac was also a big winner last year, and both categories are expected to continue their growth path over the next 5 years.

The whisky category showed mixed results in 2020, as tariffs negatively caused single malt Scotch to fall 6.1% in volume while bar and restaurant closures dragged down Irish whiskey. Last year was the first time on record that these two sub-categories posted volume declines in the US.

Overall, total whisky volumes grew 4.9%, led by Japanese, Indian and U.S. whiskies, in that order. The whisky category’s growth, however, is outpacing vodka, with total whisky expected to be larger than total vodka in volume consumption by 2022.

No- and low-alcohol spirits are being driven by alcohol-free spirit alternatives and spirit-adjacent products that focus on mood-enhancing properties like adaptogens. Though trending from a small base, no-alcohol spirits are expected to end 2021 up +31.4% in the US.

Wine resonates with consumers during lockdowns

Total wine in the US grew slightly, rising 0.7% by volume and 1.5% by value in 2020, reversing the volume declines seen in 2019. Both still and sparkling wine volumes were up, but still wine is forecast to go back to softening declines as RTDs and spirits grow at faster rates. Despite a non-celebratory 2020, sparkling wine managed to post growth, with Prosecco (especially rosé expressions) making up for declines in Champagne consumption.

Low-alcohol wine volumes more than doubled in 2020 in the US, with major brands entering the category offering lower calorie and lower sugar options in sessionable ABVs – a direct response to RTD occasion overlap pressure. Imported wine volumes grew more than domestic US wine from markets such as Chile, Italy, and New Zealand, which did not have tariffs in place.

RTDs set to become second largest beverage alcohol category in the US, in terms of volume consumption

The biggest gains in beverage alcohol consumption in the U.S. last year were seen across the RTD category (which includes the popular hard seltzer sub-category), making RTDs more sizable in volume than total spirits in the US, and by the end of 2021, larger than total wine.

RTDs grew 62.3% by volume in 2020, led by hard seltzers which grew 130%. Hard seltzers represent over 55% share of the total RTD category in the US, followed by flavored alcoholic beverages (FABs), and ready-to-drink cocktails/long drinks.

“Though the cocktail/long drink sub-category is still comparatively small by volume, the segment grew +52.7% in 2020 with canned cocktail growth spurred by on-premise closures and the on-premise pivot to ‘drinks to go,’ as well as more at-home consumption and outdoor socialization,” notes Rand.

IWSR has tracked a rise in more spirit-based RTD launches at a higher price point due to taxes in U.S., but volumes remain small compared to the traditional malt-based segment. However, several U.S. states have recently passed or are reviewing legislation to reduce spirit-based RTD tax reductions.

The overall RTD category shows no signs of slowing down – IWSR expects RTDs to grow to be 22% volume share of total beverage alcohol by 2025 in the US.

No- and low-alcohol beer is a bright spot for the beer category

Beer continued annual volume declines with a 2.8% loss in the U.S. in 2020, as volume gains in imported beer weren’t enough to sustain losses in domestic beer volume. Nonetheless, imported beer grew market share in 2020, ISWR said.

No- and low-alcohol beer proved a bright spot for the category, however, and the category is expected to continue to grow. Additionally, flavored beer grew 10.4% in the U.S. in 2020, driven by cheladas and radlers.

New Bill to Tackle Multiple Substances Abuse Introduced

Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S. and its affiliate, Responsibility.org, urged passed of the just-introduced Multiple Substance Driving Prevention Act which would increase investment in technologies for detecting multiple-substance impairment and improve reporting on the phenomenon.

The measure was introduced in the U.S. Senate by Sens. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.), members of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. Representatives Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) and Kathleen Rice (D-N.Y.) introduced a companion measure in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Driving under the influence is a preventable crime, and we must do everything in our power to create a future where there are fewer victims. Our legislation would help address this problem by providing states with the flexibility to invest in programs and technologies to better identify, monitor, or treat impaired drivers,” Capito said.

“DISCUS  and Responsibility.org are committed to eliminating impaired driving from America’s roadways,” said Chris Swonger, president/ceo, of the two organizations. “The risk of crashes increases exponentially when drivers are impaired from multiple substances, and this issue is only now starting to be acknowledged and addressed as it continues to be a growing problem for states.  The process of identifying, prosecuting, and treating these high-risk offenders requires specialized training, better data collection and new technologies and countermeasures.  We are confident this bill will help states build a foundation for addressing this ongoing problem.

The legislation seeks to increase national investment and maximization of innovative programs and technology to eliminate multiple substance impaired driving. Specifically, the bill would:

  • Reform the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) National Priority Safety Program (Section 405) to allow funds to be used for drug toxicology, impaired-driving related training for law enforcement, and general offender monitoring technology.
  • Further clarify that states may use funds to improve reporting and share impaired driving data.
  • Require a GAO study on the reporting of impaired driving arrest and citation data into federal databases and the landscape of how states share information.

In 2016, the NHTSA found that 50.5% of fatally injured drug-positive drivers tested positive for two or more drugs in their system and 40.7% were found to have alcohol in their system. New traffic fatality data from January 2020 to September 2020 showed that even though vehicle miles traveled declined, traffic fatalities still increased by 4.6% compared to 2019. Unfortunately, multiple substance-impaired driving is underreported due to challenges in detecting and identifying drug involvement.
