Latin Gin, ‘the World’s Ultra Luxurious Premium Gin’, Makes Its U.S. Debut in Florida

Southern Glazer’s Wine & S piritswill distribute the new, ultra-premium gin throughout Florida with four distinguished expressions — Latin Spice, Latin Lover, Latin Secco and Latin Beach.

Created by Co-Founder Ivania Sher, Latin Gin was conceived of as an ideal choice for modern-day gin drinkers. Sher grew up in El Salvador amongst a family of international diplomats; she witnessed her parents entertain guests from around the world with beautiful, inventive cocktails. With this catalyst, she decided to create a premium gin from a female and worldly perspective.

“I understand the modern gin drinker, because I am one. I wanted to create a premium spirit that feels fresh, contemporary and versatile,” says Sher. “South Florida is the gateway to The Americas, and what better region to launch a Latin-inspired premium gin than here. We look forward to working with Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits to continue expanding Latin Gin across the country.”

Pernod Ricard Launches Jefferson’s Ocean Aged At Sea Rye Whiskey

Jefferson’s Bourbon (Pernod Ricard) launches Ocean Aged at Sea Rye this morning. This 26th voyage, and newest addition to the popular Jefferson’s Ocean family, marks Jefferson’s inaugural exploration at sea with rye whiskey.

The liquid is a fully mature rye whiskey that was double-barreled (75% in char 3 barrels and 25% in toasted barrels). It was then placed on ships – a singularly uncommon place to live – and traveled through ports around the world as part of the unique finishing technique for which the Ocean series is known.

“I’ve always had the desire to create a Rye within the Jefferson’s Ocean portfolio, but wanted to make one that you could sip – so I did just that,” Trey Zoeller, Jefferson’s founder, said. “The unpredictability of the ocean – and the way it affects our products – has always been intriguing to me, but this, combined with our double barreling process, made for a more robust profile, while the increased interactions with barrels and fluctuating air temperatures balanced the spice of rye. This aging process churns and treats our whiskey like no rickhouse could.”

Jefferson’s Ocean Aged at Sea Rye is described as a rye balanced by caramelization that comes specifically from the sea-aging process. The combination of the new char 3 barrels and new toasted barrels adds a flavorful depth of marshmallow and toffee on the nose and palate. These rich notes are delicately accented by leather and tobacco with a long finish of baking spices and cinnamon that are kissed with a touch of sea salt.

Jefferson’s Ocean Aged at Sea Rye is non-chill filtered and bottled at 96 proof.  SRP: $79.99/750mL

Ilegal Mezcal Moves to Recycled Glass Bottles

The global glass shortage has caused supply chain disruptions, but for Ilegal – the leading artisanal mezcal – it presented an opportunity for an eco-friendly solution. All Ilegal Mezcal bottles will now be made with 100% recycled glass, representing a pivot to a more sustainable future. The new bottles will enter the market this month.

The bottles are produced by Fusion y Formas, a family-run company that recycles 10,000 tons of glass each year at its facility in Jalisco, Mexico. Fusion y Formas’ production process emits less CO2 emissions and saves energy during the smelting process, since recycled glass is more malleable. Compared to newly made bottles, those at Fusion y Formas require about 30% less energy to create.

Since Ilegal is independent, founder John Rexer was able to quickly pivot to a sustainable solution: a brief meeting between Rexer and Fusion y Formas Director Andrés Hernández Romo sealed the partnership deal.

“We measure success at Ilegal not just by cases sold, but also by our partners and environmental initiatives we can enact. We share the same vision with Fusion y Formas to build sustainably and scale responsibly, while maintaining quality above all else,” said Rexer.

“My family has long taken glass that would otherwise go to a landfill and crafted it into bottles and more, with the goal of minimizing waste. I enjoy Ilegal Mezcal and am happy to help move them to bottles that are better for the environment,” said Romo.

Ilegal was created with commitment to sustainability and biodiversity. Using only fully mature 100% sustainable espadín agave, their mezcal contains no artificial colors, yeasts, flavors, or additives. Waste water at the distillery is treated and then re-used for distillation, and agave fiber waste is transformed into adobe style bricks used at the facility.

The recycled bottles – available in 375ml and 750ml sizes – enter the market this month.

21st Amendment, Fieldwork Brewing Merge

The 21st Amendment Brewery and Fieldwork Brewing said they merged to create Field Amendment Brewing Co.  The combined entity distributes in 35 states.

Shaun O’Sullivan, 21st Amendment Brewmaster and Co-Founder, said: “This idea came about when I would secretly bring watermelon slices into Fieldwork’s Berkeley location and put them into my IPA. One time Barry caught me doing that, we had words, but then talked through how this seemingly terrible idea made sense for both companies.”

To celebrate the merger Fieldwork is set to release a 16 ounce-four pack limited edition release of Double Dry Hopped Watermelon Pulp this week at all seven of their joint Bay Area tap locations including the 21st Amendment’s San Francisco Brewpub and San Leandro Tap Room.

Wineries Sued Over Website Accessibility

Dozens of North Coast wineries have been sued, mostly by the Center for Disability Access, a part of Potter Handy LLP, a San Diego, Claif., civil rights law firm, according to the Press Democrat newspaper.  Court documents describe the plaintiff as Andres Gomez, who is described as a “legally blind man who uses screen-reader software, which is designed to audibly describe what’s displayed on the screen and guide the visitor in navigating the site and inputting information.”

Wine Institute, Napa Valley Vintners and Sonoma County Vintners have alerted their members about the risk of such actions and provided tips that could help them start developing solutions.

Among the problems encountered by Gomez is text descriptions for images, too low of contrast between background and foreground elements, lack of keyboard accessibility, and a user interface that doesn’t have built-in instructions for assistive devices.

Cases relying on the Americans with Disabilities Act that are filed in federal court have also been growing. But federal guidelines are murky, last really updated in 2010.  Advocacy groups have asked the Justice Department to provide rulemaking on website standards.  The National Federal of the Blind has called for congressional action and criticized law firms that “seem to be more interested in a quick monetary settlement as opposed to working with companies to ensure that their website is accessible.”

One provider of artificial intelligence solutions is AudioEye.  Another is UserWay.
