In addition to the winery, the 71-year-old Edwards sold the tasting room and 79 acres of vineyards to the French Champagne house. Terms weren’t disclosed.
The sale comes just five months after she stepped down as winemaker, turning production over to associate winemaker Heidi von der Mehden.
Edwards told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat she had hired von der Mehden in 2015, intending for her to eventually take over winemaking responsibilities, so she could focus on running the business as chief executive officer. After she and her husband decided they wanted more time away from work, Edwards thought more about succession and knew her children were not going to take over the business.
International Wine Associates represented Merry Edwards Winery in the transaction.
