How U.S. Trade Policy May Change Under Biden

How would U.S. trade policy differ under Joe Biden, the presumptive President-elect?

“I’ve been told that if you close your eyes, you might not be able to tell the difference” between the Biden and Trump trade agendas, Nasim Fussell, former Republican trade counsel at the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, told Reuters. “Biden’s not going to be quick to unravel some of these tariffs.”

He’s seen as working more closely with U.S. allies in confronting China on trade, but unlikely to roll back President Trump’s tariffs on imported aluminum, Chinese or European goods any time soon.  Part of that reflects his support from trade unions, who are skeptical of free trade deals.

Plus, his top priority is to revive an economy hurt by the coronavirus.

Nor will he prioritze a trade agreement with the United Kingdom, at least for his first 100 days.
