Every Odom Corp. truck is a rolling billboard for the brands it delivers, from Coca-Cola to Miller-Coors, and the company has adopted the DriveCam video telematics safety program to make sure that the trucks and their drivers are sending the right brand message. “Our suppliers spend a lot of time and money creating a positive image for their brands and Odom has a responsibility to represent their brands and leave a positive impression on the public,” said Odom Delivery and Fleet Manager Darrin Stockman.
The DriveCam exception-based video safety program combines video capture of road incidents such as hard braking or sudden swerving, data analysis of those incidents, and personalized coaching insights to improve driving behavior. Today, Lytx helps protect more than 650,000 commercial and government fleet drivers under its DriveCam program.
Odom deployed DriveCam to its entire 354-vehicle fleet to encourage safe driving habits among their drivers and to provide security for the company and the drivers from wrongful litigation.
” Trucks are targets for accidents because they think companies have deep pockets,” he said, repeating a common sentiment in the commercial transportation world. “We do a good job training our drivers, and now with the DriveCam video, we’re able to prove where fault really lies.”
That isn’t to say that some drivers’ skills couldn’t use improving. Which leads to reason #2 to adopt the DriveCam program: it helps fleets make good drivers better.
“DriveCam is a great coaching tool when we become aware of any deficiencies in our drivers’ performance,” said Stockman. “We can use DriveCam video to demonstrate the issue and to coach the driver to improve. Since we have been using DriveCam, driving events captured by the event recorder have decreased and so have the small dents and dings on our fleet.”
“Odom is in the beverage distribution business, and we take a lot of pride in delivering in a timely and safe manner to our customers,” Stockman continued. “Really good drivers are hard to come by, so we want to recognize and praise our drivers when they do a good job. DriveCam is another tool that allows us to do this.” That leads to reason #3 to adopt the DriveCam program: it makes recognition easy.
“Our team has a really tough job and it’s important to recognize and reward the drivers who can maintain both a high level of productivity and safety,” said Stockman. He also acknowledged that there was a learning curve to help the drivers understand the DriveCam program’s benefits. “Once they understand, they won’t drive without it. DriveCam gives them peace of mind.”
