About 1,000 Family Dollar stores will begin carrying alcohol, the company said in an earnings release. Family Dollar is a unit of Dollar Tree, which also said it is expanding a test in which some items are being sold for more than $1. In the fiscal first quarter, the company added adult beverages to its inventory in about 45 stores.
But the alcohol retailing effort is running into headwinds. In the wake of community protests, Louisville officials last year rejected the company’s bid for a liquor license. And in January, Ohio officials overruled Dayton city officials’ objections against liquor permits for Family Dollar stores.
