CNN breathlessly reported earlier this week that Facebook would “restrict sales and limit content related to alcohol and tobacco products.”
The policy is a lot less draconian than CNN portrayed it. For instance, a bev/al marketers won’t be shocked to learn that “Ads that promote or reference alcohol must comply with all applicable local laws, required or established industry codes, guidelines, licenses and approvals, and include age and country targeting criteria consistent with Facebook’s targeting guidelines and applicable local laws.”
That means you can’t promote your product on Facebook if you are in countries that prohibit ads promoting of referencing alcohol, including Afghanistan, Brunei, Bangladesh, Egypt, Gambia, Kuwait, Libya, Lithuania, Norway, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
