Diversity Can Buffer Winegrowing Regions from Climate Change

A new study, just published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, concludes that major winegrowing regions may need to change the grapes they are growing to cope with climate change.

That raises huge problems, starting with significantly reduced yields.  Yields could be cut as much as in half, the study says.  Plus, local laws often restrict what can be grown.  Add to all that the fact that winegrape growers would need to learn how to grow new varietals.  Consumers would face higher prices for wine, and vintner would likely experience a decline in volume.
