The bottles have the potential of having just 10% the carbon footprint of glass bottles and just 70% the footprint of PET. Unlike prior bottles used by, among others, Truett-Hurst a few years ago, the Diageo bottle does not contain a plastic lining, making it truly a paper bottle that is expected to be fully recyclable.
The bottle will debut with Johnnie Walker, the world’s No.1 Scotch Whisky, in early 2021.
The technology will allow brands to have sustainable, scalable, single-mold branded designs without material compromise that significantly reduce the reliance of single-use plastics all while not compromising on the existing quality of the product.
Diageo announced the launch of Pulpex Ltd., a partnership between Diageo and Pilot Lite for a new world-leading sustainable packaging technology company. On its website, Pulpex said the bottles have the potential to have just 10% the carbon footprint of glass bottles and just 70% the footprint of PET.
To develop the technology further, Pulpex Ltd. has established a consortium of world leading FMCG companies, including Unilever, and PepsiCo. Pulpex said that soon the bottles will be cheaper than most glass bottles, capable of taking both carbonated and hot-fill products.
Ewan Andrew, Chief Sustainability Officer, Diageo PLC, said: “We’re proud to have created this world first. We are constantly striving to push the boundaries within sustainable packaging and this bottle has the potential to be truly ground-breaking. It feels fitting that we should launch it with Johnnie Walker, a brand that has often led the way in innovation throughout its 200 years existence.”
