CVNE – Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España, also known as Cune (pronounced Coo-nay), a leading producer of Spanish wines from Rioja, recently purchased the historic Cava D.O. producer, Roger Goulart, adding the Penedes-based estate to its portfolio of three separate Rioja wineries: Cune, Vina Real and Contino.
Roger Goulart, located in Sant Esteve Sesrovires (Penedes, Catalonia) was founded in 1882 by the Canal family. A long-established producer of traditional method age-worthy sparkling wines, Roger Goulart is now a registered CAVA D.O. The winery boasts majestic underground cellars that were completed in 1919, and today it remains one of the few producers still using its underground cellars for aging cavas.
“Venturing beyond Rioja with the purchase of a premium Cava producer in Penedes is a first for our company” stated Victor Urrutia, CEO of CVNE and 5th generation of CVNE’s founders. “We face this new chapter with optimism and excitement” he continued. “75% of Roger Goulart sales are in international markets and our plan is to keep the historical and cultural legacy of Roger Goulart alive, while enhancing our Rioja portfolio with these delicious quality wines.”
Since its early years, Roger Goulart has maintained a commitment to the production of long-aged cavas (Gran Reservas) from indigenous Spanish grape varieties, such as Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Parellada and continues to age its cavas well beyond the minimum aging requirements identified by the Designation of Origin Cava of 30 months.
