The Covid-19 PSA was timed to coincide with National Beer Day. Rather than celebrate Repeal of Prohibition, brewers have decided to make beer no different than the other “days” celebrated on April 7: National No Housework Day or National Coffee Cake Day, or National Girl Me Too Day.
The thing is, housework was never prohibited by a Constitutional Amendment, nor restored by one. Nor was eating Coffee Cake. But beer was. It’s important, we think, to celebrate the important occasions in one’s past — and certainly Repeal of Prohibition should be worth celebrating.
The visuals on the spot are a collection of old selfies showing people drinking. Look for yourself here.
We think this spot is a truly missed opportunity. It could have opened with a Prohibition shot, and a voice over: “April 7, 1933. Prohibition ended for beer, and good times rolled again across the United States. We’ve been in lockdown for a year, but . . . if you get your shot . . . goods times can roll once more.” And closed with some of those selfies. Or the Clydesdales. Or both.
